Recently, the International Lockout Council (ILC) conducted a LOTO Awareness Course for the team at Ramly Food Industries Sdn Bhd. The training provided participants with greater awareness of hazardous energy control and the importance of applying appropriate isolation practices before maintenance and servicing work begins.
The session was designed to strengthen workplace safety knowledge and help participants better understand how LOTO, Safety Equipment, Energy Isolation and Risk Assessment work together as part of a proactive safety management approach.
LOTO in the Food Manufacturing Industry
Food manufacturing environments rely heavily on machinery and production equipment. Maintenance and servicing activities may involve conveyors, mixers, packaging equipment, electrical panels, pumps, pneumatic systems and other machinery. Production pressure can sometimes create an additional challenge. When equipment needs to be repaired or adjusted, there may be pressure to restore production as quickly as possible. However, safety should never be compromised for speed. A properly implemented Energy Isolation procedure provides a structured way for maintenance personnel to control hazardous energy before working on equipment.
